A Call to Action by the National Academies
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is a society of distinguished scholars dedicated to furtherance of science and technology and serves to advise the federal government on scientific and technical matters. The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a parallel organization of engineers advising the federal government. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) examines policy matters pertaining to the health of the public and advises the federal government on issues of medical care, research, and education. The National Research Council (NRC) is operated jointly by the NAS and NAE with the IOM to provide services to the government. These private, nonprofit institutions have conducted many groundbreaking studies that raise awareness about important issues and drive public policy decisions. Several recent documents concerning science education have called for change, as has the National Science Foundation (Vision and Change).
